Lesotho United promotes gender rights

Lesotho United is Kick4Life’s activity-based programme that uses the power of football and sport to promote gender equality in Lesotho, working with both girls and boys to promote gender rights and to challenge gender discrimination and gender-based violence. The curriculum, which has separate modules for girls and boys, providing safe spaces to share and learn, before brining all participants together in a mixed gender tournament, also covers sexual health and HIV prevention, developing transferable life skills, entrepreneurship, and employability.

Delivered by trained coaches, the Lesotho United curriculum includes interactive sessions, filled with energy, learning, and growth, and represents a significant evolution in Kick4Life’s community outreach, bringing together two previously separate initiatives, Girls United and Champions United under one inclusive umbrella. This unification followed collaborative discussions with participants and funding partners and enables a more integrated and impactful delivery.

Over 400 girls and boys have already been reached through the programme this year through partnerships with local schools including Omniscient High School, Thetsane English Medium High School, Maseru High School, and most recently, Bophelong Inter-Continental School. During a graduation last week at Bophelong, students brought the curriculum to life with vibrant performances, including a thought-provoking drama and poetry raising awareness on human rights and gender-based violence. These creative showcases reflected not only what they had learned, but how they have grown. Lesotho United isn’t just a curriculum – it’s a journey of empowerment, equality, and hope.

Mr. Mokhathi, Bophelong Inter-Continental School said: “Thank you, Kick4Life, for running these valuable sessions. We’re living in a fast-paced world, and your support truly means a lot to us. As teachers, we’re often overwhelmed with work and focused heavily on delivering the school curriculum. That can sometimes mean life skills and wellbeing are overlooked. Kick4Life steps in at just the right time to help guide our students in the right direction, and we’re incredibly grateful for that.”

Kick4Life’s Community Programmes Director, ‘Makatleho Puky Pitso, added: “Young people are faced with challenging issues, and it is through our sessions that they are equipped with life skills that enable them to make informed decisions for their future.”
