K4L's Mickey first past the post
Kick 4 Life's mascot Mickey the Monkey stormed to victory in the 7th Mascot Grand National last September, gaining national exposure for the charity's work.
The National at Huntingdon Racecourse is one of the most bizarre events in the sporting calendar, with more than 70 mascots from a range of sports clubs, companies and charities bidding for victory in the 200 yard hurdle.
With starting odds of 9-1, Mickey surprised the field, romping home despite the best efforts of perennial saboteur Captain Blade of Sheffield United, whose wild lunge at the penultimate fence missed the monkey by inches. K4L's other mascot Lesotho the Lion came home sixth.
Mickey said: "It was a lot of fun and I was really pleased to win, but most importantly it meant Kick 4 Life got some great coverage in the national press."
Amy Starkey, managing director of the racecourse added: "The race went really well and there was a fantastic atmosphere with a good family crowd enjoying the spectacle, the kids seemed to love it and I was really pleased that Mickey the Monkey from the Kick 4 Life charity won it."
