Co-founders of K4L, Steve and Pete Fleming attempted a unique challenge by kicking a football for 250 miles across Malawi to raise money for children orphaned by Aids. Kicking along dirt tracks and roads in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees centigrade, they completed the challenge in nine days, covering more than a marathon a day. Achievements included:
- Raising £13,000 for the St John’s Project in Malawi which is supported by Action Aid. The funds were used to
- provide some of the children at the project with the chance of an education. While primary education is free to all, from the age of 11 school fees are introduced that the vast majority cannot afford.
- build a workshop for teaching children trades such as carpentry and metalwork.
- repair a toilet block that had been destroyed by a falling tree leaving the children sharing very limited and primitive facilities.
- fund a new position for an HIV/AIDS education officer in the Mzuzu area for the next two years.
- Gaining national and local media coverage in the UK to raise awareness of the Aids crisis in Malawi
- Working with senior officials at the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to promote the role of football in tackling Aids
- Gaining national media coverage in Malawi for the work of Action Aid in fighting poverty and disease
- Distributing kit and footballs to a range of projects including the SOS Children’s Village in Mzuzu which is support by the English FA
- Reaching Number 3 in the Malawi charts with the Kick 4 Malawi charity single
